Cortes de la Frontera

Cortes is a typical Spanish White Village or Pueblo Blanco and is ideally situated between 2 national Parks, the Sierra de Grazalema and Los Alcornocales and is overlooked by the mountain range of the Serrania de Ronda Mountains. It is an ideal location for Birdwatchers, walkers, nature lovers or people looking to relax in stunning surroundings.

It is ideally located for exploring the Western Andalucia area, Ronda (regarded as Hemmingway's favourite town) is only 30 minutes drive away. The hilltop town of Gaucin is a short drive, this town is on the migration routes for many rare birds and its hilltop location provides stunning views of Gibraltar and the coast.

VIEW LOCATION MAP IN NEW WINDOW

The Beaches of the Costa del Sol are a 45 minute drive away and a little further on you will find the infamous millionaires playgrounds of Puerto Banus and Marbella.

The train from Algeciras, regarded as one of Europes prettiest rail journeys, stops in Estacion de Cortes and will take you on to Ronda if you want to leave the car behind. Granada, home of the famous Alhambra is a 3 hour drive away.

The local architecture is very interesting, the Town Hall dates back to 1784 and is built in a neo-classical style, the bullring was originally built in 1894 and restored in 1921. The Bullring is still in use today for occasional bullfights.

For the more active people there are walking tours run by local guides who will take you off the beaten track to really appreciate the beauty of the area. If that sounds too much like hard work then horse riding or mountain biking can also be arranged. The largest cork oak wood in Southern Spain is nearby and is home to deer, wild flowers and even wild boar.

Cortes is well served for eating, from local small tapas bars to hotels and first class restaurants, every taste can be catered for and you can wash the meal down with a glass of the local wine. After dark there is a selection of late night music bars to entertain you.

Things to do:

Walking
This part of Spain is very famous for hillwalking and rambling, the mountains locally offer some very challenging walks and mountain climbs. The valleys and river beds offer less strenuous walking, as do the many cork and pine forests which cover the area. Many books have been published on walking in this area and some of them are in the house for you to read.

If you are less confident then there are local walking guides that will run escorted walks for you, this is an ideal way to meet local people and learn something about the area at the same time. Our representatives in Cortes will be pleased to help set this up for you when you arrive.

The best time to appreciate the walking opportunities is Spring and Autumn when the weather is dry and not so sunny.   You may well spot one of the rare Spanish Firs (Pinsapo) which are said to date back over 2 million years.

Photography & Painting

There are so many photographic opportunities in this area it is almost impossible to list them all, the hanging white villages perched on the mountain slopes are certainly worth looking at.

The old Spanish men going about their daily business make excellent character pictures and the sunsets from the mountain tops are worth waiting for.

Birdwatching

Sitting on one of the 2 main migration routes between Europe and Africa, Southern Spain offers some fantastic opportunities for Ornithologists. Egyptian, Griffon and rare Black Vultures and the Eagles - Gold, Imperial, Booted, Bonelli's and the Honey Buzzard, the Pallid Harrier are some of the birds that you are likely to see from the cliffs around the area.
