Antequera:
Antequera
is located at the crossroads of Andalucia and the apartment suited us very
well as a pied a terre for sightseeing further afield, east an hour's drive
to the Alhambra in Granada, north an hour and a half to Cordoba, north
west an hour and a half to Sevilla, and west to Cadiz/Jerez two hours.
When we weren't touring, we sought out interesting sites in the Antequera
area either on foot or short drives such as the Roman/Moorish castle ruins
located above Los Laureles in the Monumental (Conservation) area; the Municipal
Museum, Casa de Sabasona, a beautifully restored home boasting the famous
Ephebus of Antequera, a 1st century Roman statue in bronze; El Torcal standing
at 6,000 feet which forms part of the Sierra del Torcal and is a landscape
of karstic relief, considered the most beautiful of its type in Europe;
the Laguna de Fuente de Piedra Nature Reserve which is a nesting ground
for flamingos, only one of two in Europe as well as the Dolmens of Antequera
which are three Megalithic burial monuments built between 2500 and 1800
BC. We hope the above will be of interest to those seeking a place in the
sun in an area steeped in historical and cultural heritage.
