Madrid is a city almost
without equal in Europe. If you need a break from it, you can take a day
trip to Avila to catch a bit of fresh air and see some amazing sites.
Madrid has so much going on it is often hard to drag yourself away from.
You will, however, eventually need a break. A day trip to Avila, a town
near Madrid, is definitely worth a trip. In fact, a visit to Avila is a
must if you visit Spain. The town is so popular, there are over 20 trains
a day from Madrid. Avila is in the south of Old Castile, part
of the Castile and Leon autonomous district. The city was originally known
for Teresa of Avila, a Roman Catholic mystic. The cathedral in the city

Parador
de Gredos, Navarredonda de Gredos, Ávila ***
This parador in the pinewood
of Navarredonda de Gredos was chosen by King Alfonso XIII in 1926. The
parador was inaugurated in 1928 as the first of the network of state run
tourist establishments. The Sierra de Gredos, where the parador stands,
is part of the central mountain system. From a spot called alto del risquillo
there is a magnificent view over the mountain range. This area provides
excellent hunting and fishing facilities. The Suite has accommodated
many famous people like General Franco. Every room is equipped with telephone,
television and minibar. The light comes in through wide windows.
This is a place where the guests enjoy a friendly and comfortable atmosphere.
The Parador is located among luxuriant pine groves within the border of
the mountain town of Navarredonda de Gredos at 60 kms from Ávila
